McCain Statement on Designation of "Boris Nemtsov Plaza" on Anniversary of Nemtsov's Murder

U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ), Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement on the city of Washington, D.C., today formally designating the block in front of the Russian Embassy as "Boris Nemtsov Plaza" in honor of the former Russian opposition leader and human rights activist. Today also marks the third anniversary of Nemtsov's murder:

"Three years ago, a Russian statesman and patriot was gunned down in the shadow of the Kremlin. Boris Nemtsov was a tireless advocate for the cause for which he ultimately gave his life: a democratic Russia. His memory lives on and inspires the people of Russia, who continue to take to the streets by the thousands demanding freedom.

"Today, 5,000 miles away from Moscow, Boris Nemtsov's friends, family, and admirers unveiled the world's first memorial to this great man. Thanks to a unanimous vote by the DC Council, the street outside of the Russian Embassy in Washington is now named Boris Nemtsov Plaza. I was proud to cosponsor similar legislation in the Senate.

"The greatest memorial to Boris will be a free Russia. And that Russia will proudly build memorials to Boris. In the meantime, America will gladly pay tribute to Boris Nemtsov--and to the millions of Russians who share his vision."
